5 ways to enjoy a swim, no matter your (dis)ability

For those of us who are able-bodied, spending a day at the beach isn’t given a second thought. We pack our towel, sunscreen, hat and off we go. Yet for those with a disability, a day at the beach can be wrought with difficulty. Everyone’s level of ability is different, which is why in Randwick City, we’ve created numerous outdoor accessible areas in the hopes that everyone can enjoy a day out in the water, no matter their ability.

Use the beach wheelchair matting
The wheelchair matting at Malabar beach allows easier access for many, not just those in wheelchairs. The matting is easier to walk on for those with balance issues and can be used for wheelchairs and walkers.

Take the access ramp
Clovelly beach can be a lovely calm beach for a swim, which is why we built an access ramp on the north side. This timber ramp leads straight down to the water so the sand can be avoided.

Borrow a beach wheelchair
We have beach wheelchairs available to borrow at our patrolled beaches in Clovelly, Coogee and Maroubra. Just pop in to see a lifeguard and they’ll take it out for you to use at any time.

Get hoisted in!
At DRLC, a portable wheelchair hoist is available on site to assist people into the water. Just ask lifeguard or call them on 9093 6300 to find out more. Plus, the training pool is all one level and means if you like to have your feet on the ground, you’ll never reach a deep end. The purpose-built gym at the Centre also accommodates those with low mobility, adjustable cable machines and equipment designed for wheelchair users.

Stroll into an ocean pool
If going down a ladder into a pool is difficult, the ocean pool in Malabar might be just what you need. It has an access ramp down to the pool deck, making getting in and out a bit gentler.

Above all, please remember our lifeguards are there to help. If you need a hand getting to and from the waters' edge, talk to our lifeguards. They are more than happy to help beachgoers access the beach safely.
