Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch has congratulated staff recognised at last week’s NSW Local Government 2024 Excellence Awards, after Randwick City Council took out two awards across as many categories for Council projects and services.

Council won the partnerships and collaboration category for the Heffron Centre and the special projects category for the eastern suburbs electric vehicle charging project, implemented in partnership with Waverley and Woollahra Councils.

Randwick Council was also highly commended in the customer experience category for its community engagement on the Randwick Local Environment Plan (LEP) Review.

“One of the pleasures of serving as Mayor is having greater visibility of the day-to-day work of Council staff”, said Randwick Mayor Philipa Veitch.

“I’m grateful for the expertise and dedication of Randwick City Council staff, and particularly want to acknowledge the staff involved in these projects. Congratulations on your achievements.”

Council opened the Heffron Centre in May 2023. As the new home of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, the centre has become a mecca for sports lovers, hosting grassroots community sports, a new gymnastics centre, multipurpose sports centre alongside the rugby league club.

In 2019, Randwick, Waverley and Woollahra councils banded together to become the first councils in NSW to provide public on-street electric vehicle charging stations. Five years on, EV owners are now able to charge on-the-go at Bondi Beach, Double Bay, Coogee Beach, Randwick, Bondi Junction and Maroubra.

“The tri-Council EV charging project is a wonderful example of how local governments can band together to take action on climate change and to preserve our environment for future generations.”

The awards are hosted annually by Local Government Professionals, the leading association representing professions in local government.
