Creative Space Barrett House offers three-months of fully subsidised studio space for creatives working across visual arts, performance, writing, design, music and more.

Nestled within the suburb of Randwick, Barrett House is a space heaving with creative history. Once home to silent filmmakers Franklyn and Mabel Barrett, Barrett House has become a site of creativity for multidisciplinary artists.

In this latest round, two studio spaces within Barrett House are available to artists seeking to develop a work or their creative practice. Artists should have a focus on sustainability within their work, through the materials they use, themes they explore or theoretical underpinnings of practice.

Successful Artists Receive

    • Fully subsidised studio space, 8 July to 3 October 2024
    • Professional portrait shots captured at Barrett House
    • Opening event supported by Council with catering, drinks and photographic documentation
    • Opportunity for public outcome presented across three days at Barrett House
      Note: This outcome is led independently by the successful artist in consultation with Council staff. Council staff are not able to support with Human Resourcing. 

Final residency allocation is at the discretion of the Evaluation Committee.

About the Spaces

Barrett House is located at 6 Barrett Place, Randwick.

Barrett House is a single-story home featuring two interconnected rooms, a sun room, kitchen, bathroom, garage and front garden. The two interconnected rooms are used as studio space, these spaces are not individually lockable.

  • Studio 2: Mabel 19m2
  • Garage space 16.14m2
  • Small front garden

Barrett House is a 15 minute walk from L2 Light rail and bus route 390X to Bondi Jnc. stops at the bottom of Gilderthorpe Avenue.

Applications & Assessment

Eligibility

  • Applicants must be 18 or over and live, work or study in the City of Randwick
  • Applicants can be working across any art form
    Note that there are two residential properties at the rear of Barrett House.
    Therefore artists with quiet practice are preferred for this program.
  • Individuals and groups are encouraged to apply
  • Applicants identifying as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, culturally and/or linguistically diverse, LGBTQIA+, and/or living with a disability are strongly encouraged to apply.
  • Preference given to artists who have not been a part of Creative Space Barrett House in the last 24 months.

NB. Successful applicants are required to hold public liability insurance for $20,000,000 in any one incident.

Applications will be assessed on:

    • How well the project meets the EOI aims (50%)
    • The individual or collective’s skills and experience to deliver the project (25%)
    • How practical and achievable to the residency is within the space (25%)

The selection panel will include Council staff and an external panelist from an arts background.

Application Process

  1. Applications are now open and will close midnight 24 June 2024.
    Successful artists notified by Friday 28 June 2024. Residency commences Monday 1 July and concludes 3 October 2024.
  2. Application is via electronic form which is accessible HERE. Complete the details, upload any attachments and click the SUBMIT button. You will receive an email response from Council acknowledging receipt.
  3. Applicants will be shortlisted and will be invited to attend a site visit and nominate preferred space.  Important: successful applicants will also be required to provide on-site staff for invigilation and events.
  4. Successful applicants will be required to sign a licence agreement with Council.
  5. Successful applicants will also be supported by Council to engage with the community via a public program e.g. exhibition, workshop, talk/presentation.
